Israel has the highest level of inequality among children in the world’s 41 most developed countries, according to a United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) report released Thursday. The report cited Israel’s 27.5 percent rate of child poverty as the highest among the countries ranked, surpassing Mexico and Chile.

The number of Israelis at risk of poverty has gone up in the last decade and is nearly twice the average in the European Union, figures released Wednesday show. According to the report, 31 percent of the population in 2011 was in danger of poverty, compared to 17% in the European Union. For the purposes of the report, risk of poverty was defined as when each member of a household is supported on less than 60% of the average financial resources available to the rest of the population.
Israeli security forces have opened fire at pro-Palestinian protesters gathered on the Syrian border. State-run Syrian television reports at least 20 protesters killed and over 200 others wounded.

The organization found in its 2010 study that 75% of impoverished individuals in Israel forgo meals due to their financial situation, a 21% rise from 2009.
